Improving Adolescent Care
Through MOC IV, providers can improve the provision of confidential care and strengthen their adolescent well visits.
As part of the Adolescent Champion Model, AHI offers physicians and physician assistants an opportunity to gain points towards Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part IV on two adolescent health topics: 1) improving the delivery of confidential care and 2) improving and increasing well visits. AHI oversees the MOC IV process for participants, providing a meaningful, turnkey experience.
The MOC Part IV process requires participants to:
- Complete two rounds of chart reviews
- Assess and analyze chart review data
- Create a quality improvement plan
- Complete one Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle
“MOC IV was a great tool to generate motivation and enthusiasm for clinicians to improve our care of adolescent patients using a standardized process and an excellent opportunity to collaborate with everyone in the office to improve clinical work flows.” —Family Medicine Physician, Michigan Medicine

Adolescent patients frequently do not receive recommended confidential care resulting in missed opportunities for addressing health concerns specific to this age group. Physicians support confidential care for adolescent patients, but have knowledge gaps around minor consent and parental notification laws. Confidential care may also be difficult to provide in a busy ambulatory care setting with parents present.
Through this MOC Part IV Project, physicians will improve the provision of confidential care to minor adolescents by more frequently spending time alone with adolescents during an annual well child visit, explaining confidentiality laws to the patient, and performing confidential risk screening.
