M. Haskell Newman, M.D.

Meshach Haskell "Hack" Newman, M.D. (M.S. 1968, Residency 1968 and 1977), died April 12, 2021, at the age of 84. Newman grew up in Shattuck, Oklahoma. After graduating from medical school at the University of Tennessee, he spent three years as a captain in the U.S. Army. He then completed residencies in otorhinolaryngology (1968) and plastic surgery (1977) at Michigan Medicine. In 1977, he became professor and chief of pediatric and craniofacial plastic surgery at the Medical School, a position he retained until his retirement in 2008.

Newman had a national reputation for his expertise in pediatric plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, adult maxillofacial surgery, and aesthetic surgery. He was associate editor of the Cleft Palate Journal and president of the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Otorhinolaryngology Society, the Michigan Cleft Palate Association, and the Rhinoplasty Society. He was also a revered faculty member. In honor of this legacy, the department established the M. Haskell Newman Professorship in 2010.

Newman encouraged his four sons' interest in baseball, soccer, and hockey, and enjoyed attending their games and following U-M athletics. The family also enjoyed skiing and fly fishing. After retirement, he pursued golf, tennis, traveling, competitive duplicate bridge, and spending time with friends and family.
