
Lynda Jun-San Yang, M.D., Ph.D. (Residency 2004) died September 15, 2022, at the age of 55.
A world-renowned peripheral nerve neurosurgeon, Yang earned her medical and doctorate degrees at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed a neurosurgical residency at the University of Michigan, followed by fellowship training at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in the United Kingdom.
Yang went on to conduct research on improving nerve regeneration at Johns Hopkins and continued her clinical training as a peripheral nerve surgeon as a visiting faculty member in the Netherlands. She then returned to U-M to become a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery.
During her 18 years in the department, she led the formation of an unparalleled multidisciplinary brachial plexus program, which she also directed. She guided the development of many multidisciplinary programs within the department as well.
Yang mentored many surgeons who are now leaders of peripheral nerve neurosurgery programs across the United States. Before her death, she had accepted the role of director of clinical outcomes research for U-M Neurosurgery and was looking forward to mentoring new faculty members.
