About

Dr. Mulholland oversees the U-M Medical Group and its faculty practice, as well as ambulatory care operations and administration. He joined the U-M faculty in 1988 and became Chair of the Department of Surgery in 2002, serving until 2019. In 2004 he was elected as member of the Institutes of Medicine of the National Academies.

Dr. Mulholland's clinical specialty is in gastrointestinal surgery, with expertise in the treatment of pancreatic and biliary cancer, neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary reconstruction, and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He is a member of the Multidisciplinary Pancreatic Cancer Program of the U-M Cancer Center, and has NIH-funded laboratory studies of basic mechanisms of metabolic control.

Dr. Mulholland received his Bachelor degree from the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He received postgraduate training in General Surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Mulholland also received a PhD from the University of Minnesota.

He returned to the faculty within the Department of Surgery in June 2022.
