Julia Kwon is an interdisciplinary artist who sews patchworks in the format of interpretative bojagi - Korean object-wrapping cloths historically created by Korean women who had limited contact with the outside world during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) - to consider ideas such as tradition, craft, feminized labor, and received notions on Asiatic femininity. She embeds patterns from contemporary sociopolitical events into her textiles to challenge the notion of authenticity and examine the complexities of constructing identities within the context of today’s world. Her work argues for capacious possibilities for one’s identity and sense of community.
Kwon holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, and a BA in Studio Art from Georgetown University. Public collections include Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery (Washington, DC), Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York, NY), Museum of International Folk Art (Santa Fe, NM), and The New York Public Library (New York, NY), among others.
VIEW EXHIBIT IN-PERSON – for patients, guests of patients, and Michigan Medicine faculty, staff, or learners.
