David Alvarez, D.O.

David Alvarez, D.O. (Residency 1995, Fellowship 1996), died January 13, 2022, at age 62.

After earning a degree in pharmacy from Butler University in Indianapolis, Alvarez worked as a hospital pharmacist before earning his D.O. from Michigan State University. He completed his medical internship in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a flight surgeon at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia. One of his proudest achievements in the military was a solo flight in a Navy helicopter.

He joined the U-M Medical School faculty in 1996, where he became a beloved family physician, teacher, and mentor. During his career at U-M, he took care of patients as a family medicine physician at Domino's Farms Family Medicine and as a primary care sports medicine physician Med Sport. He also served as team physician for Eastern Michigan University for more than 20 years.

Alvarez loved his family and loved spending time with them, whether traveling or watching movies at home. He enjoyed sports (and had a special fondness for Indianapolis 500 events), and he was an accomplished backpacker and hammock-maker, with a sewing station set up in his basement. He was very fond of the outdoors and occasionally slept nights in his hammock, where neighbors might find him in the morning, even in sub-zero temperatures.

This obituary is based on ones published by the Ann Arbor News and by the Department of Family Medicine.
