Luanne Thomas Ewald, FACHE, M.H.A., who has more than 25 years of experience working in healthcare, has been selected as the new chief operating officer of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital at Michigan Medicine.
Ewald is currently the CEO of Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where she has overseen the Detroit facility and seven outpatient centers since 2016. She begins her new role at Michigan Medicine Jan.6
Ewald will be responsible for the strategic leadership and operational management of all administrative activities at Mott and Von Voigtlander. In partnership with the chief clinical officer and chief nursing officer, she will plan, manage and evaluate all administrative, financial, and operational goals.

During her tenure at DMC, Ewald has held several leadership positions in strategic planning, ambulatory network development, marketing and administration. Prior to her role as CEO, she was DMC’s regional vice president for business development.
She says she’s energized about working with the children’s and women’s health faculty and staff at Michigan Medicine.
“It’s been a passion of mine to serve women and children because women’s and children’s health are integral to the strength of families and communities,” Ewald says.
“I’m excited for this opportunity to join the Ann Arbor community and continue my purpose and passion in another part of the state. Michigan Medicine has a strong commitment to providing women and children with the highest quality care possible, and I’m looking forward to working with the institution’s teams on behalf of families.”
Ewald has also been involved in numerous community and professional organizations. She is the chairman of the Michigan Hospital Association’s Council on Children’s Health and was recently appointed to the American Hospital Association’s Maternal and Child Health Council. She serves on the board of directors for several youth-focused organizations, and has received numerous honors and recognitions from civic and professional organizations.
She received her bachelor of science degree in business administration with a specialization in marketing from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a master's degree in hospital and health administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati. She has two daughters, Maggie, 19, who is a sophomore at Marquette University; and Mollie,16.

In late March, Michigan Medicine signed an affiliation agreement with Sparrow Health System, paving the way for ongoing collaboration between the two systems. The first implementation of the agreement included a joint venture integrating the pediatric services offered through Sparrow Children’s.
