Michigan Medicine plans to add additional express shuttle buses to support existing and new routes for employees from parking lots.
The changes are:
- Glazier Way parking lot: Adding two incremental buses to MedExpress, to improve frequency and reduce crowding for shuttle from Glazier Way lot to main medical campus.
- Crisler Lot: Activate new south Ann Arbor morning express shuttle, with two buses providing service from Crisler lot to main medical campus. This new morning service would complement existing afternoon express service from the main medical campus to Crisler.
- U.S. 23 at Lee and 8 Mile roads: Expand express shuttle schedule in morning and afternoon to allow daily increase in ridership from 103 to 163 passengers. The enhanced service access will begin on Sept. 30. New rider requests can be sent to commuter-options@med.umich.edu and interested riders will be notified when shuttle space is available.
Implementation of these bus routes is anticipated within 2-3 months, based on ability to execute new contracts for buses. Exact details of operational plans are being developed now.
Last month, Michigan Medicine redesigned parking permit access in parking structures to create more patient and visitor spaces in P3 (Taubman structure).
“We realize that this created some challenges for our employees, but remain committed to provide safe, timely, and reliable parking and transportation solutions to accommodate those who utilize parking,” said T. Anthony Denton, J.D., M.H.A., senior vice president and chief operating officer for the University of Michigan Health System, the clinical arm of the academic medical center, Michigan Medicine.
In addition to the additional bus and shuttles, Michigan Medicine also is working on other efforts, including:
- New Wall Street West structure under construction, to be completed Fall 2020, with more than 1,000 employee spaces.
- Pursuit of other park & ride locations.
- Maximizing use of East Ann Arbor parking areas and express shuttle service.
- Employee focus groups scheduled later this month, to better understand opportunities for improvement.
- Creation of a dedicated staff position to assist employees with best parking and transportation options. Anticipated launch later this month.
- Ongoing work with campus colleagues on a longer-term parking strategy to support ongoing growth.
Denton said Michigan Medicine leaders recognize the parking situation is challenging and employee input and patience is appreciated.
