Michigan Medicine once again secured high marks for training the next generation of health care leaders in the 2022 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings, released today (March 30).
The University of Michigan Medical School, School of Nursing and Department of Biomedical Engineering are rated among the best nationally for their various educational programs.
The medical school ranks No. 15 for primary care training and is tied for No. 15 among research medical schools.
U.S. News and World Report also ranked eight specialties, and U-M achieved a top-11 ranking in all eight: Surgery (4), Anesthesiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology (both at 6), Internal Medicine (7), Family Medicine (tied for 7), Radiology (9), Pediatrics (tied for 10) and Psychiatry (tied for 11).
The school’s reputation among residency directors continues to be strong, as the U-M registered a second-place tie among research schools (score of 4.5 out of 5), and a third-place tie among primary care schools (4.2 out of 5).
The rankings include new data for 2022, including: percentage of 2012-14 graduates practicing direct patient care in health professional shortage areas (43.5), ranked 40th nationally; percentage of 2012-14 graduates practicing direct patient care in rural areas (1.54), ranked 129th nationally; and percentage of 2012-14 graduates practicing in primary care specialties (18.6); ranked 136th nationally.
USNWR also calculated a Diversity Index for all medical schools, calculated by the percentage of medical school enrollment from underrepresented minorities (14.1) and percentage of enrollment from underrepresented minorities relative to state or national proportions (57.8). Our overall Diversity Index ranking is tied for 68th nationally.
The School of Nursing master’s degree program is 11th nationally, with top-10 nurse practitioner rankings in adult gerontology primary care (tied for 8) and family (9). Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is No. 14, with a top-10 nurse practitioner ranking in family (tied for 9).
The U-M, which operates its Department of Biomedical Engineering as a joint venture between the Medical School and College of Engineering, is tied for No. 10 nationally in biomedical engineering/bioengineering.
