Hitinder Gurm, M.D., has been selected to be the academic medical center chief medical officer (CMO) for University of Michigan Health, effective March 1.
In this role, Gurm will provide senior executive leadership for safe, high-quality clinical care, professionalism, risk management and other key clinical services.
He will ensure medical care remains consistent with the mission and vision of the clinical enterprise through engagement with other U-M Health leaders, administrators and governing boards.
In collaboration with the chief quality officer and other U-M Health and regional network leadership, the new CMO’s systemwide responsibility includes establishing the direction and priorities for U-M Health in ensuring and enhancing the overall quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care delivery across our statewide network including University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and UM Health-West.
Prior to this role, Gurm served as the chief clinical officer for U-M Health's adult hospitals since June 2021. He has also served as the associate chief clinical officer in the cardiovascular/neurological subsegment in the adult hospitals.
A professor of internal medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Gurm received cardiology training at the Cleveland Clinic and joined the U-M faculty in 2005. He leads the Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiovascular Consortium (BMC2), a multi-center, quality improvement registry funded by BCBS.
