Nearly a decade ago, Michael Gaies, M.D., associate professor of pediatric cardiology, recognized a need for better data on cardiac intensive care for children. With John Charpie, M.D., Ph.D., the Mott congenital heart program co-director, he launched the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium, a data-sharing initiative that allows hospitals to evaluate their own outcomes and learn best practices from high-performing peers. Postoperative mortality dropped by 24% among 18 participating hospitals between 2014 and 2018, according to Michigan Medicine-led research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. —Beata Mostafavi
