Colin Campbell, M.D.

Colin Campbell, M.D., former associate dean of the U-M Medical School, died December 1, 2019, at age 92. The son of a naval officer, Campbell was living in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor invasion, and he was training to be a Navy medical corpsman when WWII ended. After graduating medical school in 1953, he interned at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He then moved to Florida to work as a general practitioner in private practice, serving impoverished patients. He later specialized in obstetrics and gynecology and earned a master's degree in education from Temple University in Philadelphia while he was on staff as an OB-GYN.

Campbell joined the U-M Medical School faculty in 1964 and later served as assistant dean and associate dean of the Medical School. He was dean of the School of Primary Medical Care at the University of Alabama-Huntsville from 1978-1983, and was the dean and provost, then president, of Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, from 1983 to his retirement in 1992.

Campbell was a runner and tennis player, an avid reader, and a history buff with a particular interest in WWII and the Civil War. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Catherine, to Europe, Asia, and Africa.
