Bertram Schnitzer, M.D., a beloved Michigan Medicine pathologist, died November 12, 2019, at the age of 90. Schnitzer was born in Germany, and his family emigrated to the U.S. in 1941. He earned his medical degree at the University of Basel in 1958, completed an internship at Baltimore City Hospital in 1959, and was chief resident at Georgetown University from 1961 to 1963. In 1966, he came to at Michigan Medicine and remained here for 51 years, becoming an international leader in hematology and hematopathology. He was known for his electron microscopy studies. Extremely interested in lymphomas, Schnitzer could often be found helping other faculty members with their difficult cases.
Schnitzer raised three sons with his wife, Anna, and had many interests outside of medicine. He ran marathons, swam at the YMCA, and enjoyed walking in downtown Ann Arbor with his wife. He is remembered as a superb diagnostician, a wonderful mentor, and a kind and gentle colleague.
