On display December 12, 2022 - December 2023. Nawal Motawi is the founder, owner and artistic director of Ann Arbor-based Motawi Tileworks, maker of handcrafted, historically inspired art pieces and decorative ceramic tile. A native Michigander and graduate of U-M Stamps School of Art & Design, Motawi got her start making tile in her garage to sell at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Now, 30 years since Motawi Tileworks began, she presents this retrospective exhibit as a celebration of local artistry, her decades-long journey as a ceramist, and the artistic styles of her work. In her designs, Motawi experiments with pattern and color through the styles of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Jugendstil.
